Most artists have three basic goals:
- To show their work and begin a dialogue with the arts community.
- To earn income from their work and begin to support the production of future work with this income.
- To engage in a diverse array of professional activities which expand the reach and relevance of their work, contributing to the fabric of the art world.

Being a fine artist can have a variety of different meanings and desired outcomes. When one thinks of a career as an artist, most envision being represented by a gallery so that, in the best of all possible worlds, they can stay in the studio and make art without worrying about any of the sordid business details. Unfortunately, the reality of being an artist often differs from this picture, especially for artists just out of school. In most cases, there is a lot of work involved in first getting your artwork seen and becoming visible to people that may be able to help you in your career.
For the purpose of this virtual seminar, we will assume that you produce work regularly and are looking for a way to develop your career as a professional artist and become active in the art world. This guide will cover ways to become visible and develop your career network, a review of the stages of an artists development what to do before, during, and after an exhibition opportunity as well as ongoing practices. We will also familiarize you with the Career Services resources that are available for you throughout your artistic development and will provide real life accounts of artists’ experiences.
